Celebrating the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for their landmark research into peripheral immune tolerance. Their work identified regulatory T cells (Tregs), which prevent the immune system from attacking the body's own tissues, and the FOXP3 gene, a transcription factor essential for the production of these cells. These discoveries redefined modern immunology by explaining how the body distinguishes self from non-self. Today, these insights are driving a revolution in medical treatments, offering new strategies for managing autoimmune diseases, improving organ transplant success, and enhancing cancer immunotherapies.
